Sister Peggy Byrnes 

(Jan. 12, 1932 - Dec. 13, 2011)

As Sister Peggy prepared to celebrate her 60th jubilee last year, she wrote about her motto. "'Fiat,' she said, was Mary's response to the angel when asked to be the Mother of God. 'Fiat' was my response as I read in John 15:9-17: "It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you...' As a Sister of Mercy, 'Fiat' has been a way (for me) to serve God's poor in so many ways."

There was never a doubt that Sister Peggy was meant be a Sister of Mercy! Throughout her entire life, the sisters were always there. In fact, her first encounter with the sisters was at birth.

A Sister of Mercy for 81 Years!

Sister Zita Marie Bruns was born May 24, 1912, the first child of Samuel and Sarah (Riggs) Bruns, of Richmond, Mo. The eldest of 13 children, she once wrote, "I learned very early the importance of being responsible and accountable. I believe my early training in the Bruns' household helped me become a compassionate person who strove to show consideration for others and real love for all God's people."

Sister of Mercy, compassionate nurse and pastoral care minister 

Sister Mary Consilia Lynskey died peacefully at Our Lady of Mercy Convent, Auburn on Dec. 1, 2011. She was 87 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 51 years.

Born June 9, 1924 in County Galway, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Lynskey. She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Jan. 14, 1960 and professed final vows on Aug. 15, 1967 at the Motherhouse in Auburn, Calif.

 From an early age, Sister Consilia had a deep desire to be of service to others. She decided to become a nurse and trained at the Rotunda and Meath Hospitals in Dublin specializing in obstetrics or what was known then as midwifery.

Teacher, Administrator, Treasurer, Friend to the Elderly  

Sister Mary Laetice was born in Kansas City, MO, the third child of Joseph and Adalaide Houlihan Williams. Her early education was at St. James Catholic School and Cardinal Glennon High School in Kansas City. In September of 1941, following graduation, she entered the Sisters of Mercy Province of Omaha (NE).

After her Novitiate, she began her ministry as a high school teacher in Omaha ('44-'49), Lincoln ('49-'50), and Chadron ('50-'52), all in Nebraska; and then in Missouri in Marshall (52-'58) and Kansas City ('58-'63) at her alma mater Glennon High. During this time, she graduated from college with a bachelor's from Mt. St. Scholastica Academy ('56), Atchinson, KS, and a master's in business from Catholic University ('62), Washington, D.C.

Sister of Mercy, Teacher and Librarian

Sister Joanna Marie Perry, RSM, died on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at McAuley Center, Farmington Hills, Mich. She was 98 and had been a Sister of Mercy for 83 years.

Sister Joanna Marie was born Joan Perry on May 8, 1913 in LaPorte, Ind., to Charles and Leontine (Magnan) Perry. She was the thirteenth of their 14 children. Following a religious vocation was not unusual in the Perry family. Her oldest sister, Lillian, had become a Sister of Mercy in Grand Rapids, as had her mother's sister, Sister Mary Roch. In addition, her mother's brother, J.D. Magnan, was a priest. Thus, when Joan felt her own calling to be a sister, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on Aug. 6, 1928 in Grand Rapids, and began her novitiate years.

    QuinnSister Margaret Quinn is pastoral assistant and music director at Saint Louis Church in Englewood, Colo. A former elementary and high school teacher, she also served as chaplain at Mercy San Juan Hospital in Carmichael, Calif. She moved to Denver in 1985 where her love of music and liturgy became the focus of her ministry.
