Sisters of Mercy and Mercy associates minister in many ways outside Mercy-sponsored institutions. They strive to be the presence of Christ in the world. For example, Sister Libby Fernandez is executive director of Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento, Calif., which feeds and counsels the homeless.

Mercy Story

  • Associate Lee Flohe persuaded a group of her friends to begin a St. Vincent dePaul's thrift store 20 years ago in Traverse City, Mich. Despite its tourist attractions on the tip of Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, there were always people in need, and in March the unemployment rate reached an unprecedented 13.1%.
